Joseph Haydn

4th movement (Presto) from Symphony e minor

Hob. I/44

"Trauer-Symphonie"

Finale. Presto

The fourth movement brings this uncompromising and dark symphony to a taut and relentless conclusion. Marked Presto, Haydn condenses the tension built throughout the work into a driving, almost restless motion.

Sharply articulated rhythms and an unyielding forward momentum propel the music with striking dramatic force. The persistent E-minor tonality remains dominant to the very end, denying any sense of consolation or release. Instead, a cool severity prevails, powerfully reinforcing the symphony’s sobriquet.

Rather than offering a triumphant resolution, the finale functions as a final intensification: music of concentrated energy, clear structure, and existential gravity—an exceptional example of Haydn’s radical expressive language during his Sturm und Drang period.
