Joseph Haydn

2nd Movement (Adagio) from the Symphony d minor

Hob. I/26

"Lamentatione"

Composed: 1768

Adagio

The second movement forms the emotional core of Haydn’s “Lamentatione” Symphony. Marked Adagio, it unfolds with restrained intensity and a deeply contemplative character.

Built around chant-like melodic lines derived from the traditional Lamentations of Holy Week, the music evokes a sense of solemn reflection and quiet devotion. The sparse orchestration and steady, almost processional pacing allow the expressive weight of the melodic material to come to the fore.

Rather than dramatic contrast, Haydn favors inwardness and concentration. The movement’s austere beauty and controlled expressivity create an atmosphere of dignified mourning, offering a moment of profound stillness within the symphony’s overall dramatic arc.
