Edvard Grieg composed his “Holberg Suite” in 1884 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ludvig Holberg, the Norwegian-Danish writer often considered the “Molière of the North.” Originally written for piano and soon arranged for string orchestra, the suite revives Baroque dance forms while coloring them with Romantic expressivity. It is both a historical homage and a work deeply anchored in Grieg’s own time.

The opening Prelude sparkles with brilliance and recalls the virtuosic gestures of Baroque keyboard music. The Sarabande offers solemn calm and noble lyricism. In the Gavotte, Grieg introduces a contrasting Musette that evokes rustic tones reminiscent of Norwegian folk traditions. The Air displays heartfelt melody imbued with religious earnestness. The final Rigaudon bursts with energy, featuring violin and viola in playful dialogue, merging Baroque elegance with folkloric exuberance.

The “Holberg Suite” thus exemplifies Grieg’s ability to fuse national character with European tradition. It soon gained great popularity and remains one of his most frequently performed orchestral works, valued for its blend of historical style and Romantic warmth.
