Biography
John Neumeier was born in 1939 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. He studied in his hometown, Chicago, Copenhagen and London. In 1963 he was engaged by John Cranko to join the Stuttgart Ballet. After four years as Ballet Director in Frankfurt am Main, he assumed leadership of the Hamburg Ballet in 1973 and developed it into one of Germany’s leading ballet companies.
Neumeier’s primary interest remains full-length evening ballets — whether set to symphonic or sacred music. He combines the classical tradition with contemporary expression in a convincing way. Among his recent creations for the Hamburg Ballet are Beethoven Project II (2021), Ghost Light (2020) and The Glass Menagerie (2019). Additionally, Dona Nobis Pacem (2022) and The Lady of the Camellias have been embraced by major houses such as the Vienna State Ballet (season 2023/24).
In 1975 he founded the “Hamburg Ballet Days” as the climax and finale of the season. Three years later he founded the Hamburg Ballet School, whose graduates today make up more than 80 % of its company. In 2011 he established the German National Youth Ballet, taking performances to unconventional venues.
As guest choreographer he has worked with numerous international companies, including The Royal Ballet in London, the Vienna, Munich and Dresden State Opera Ballets, Stuttgart Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, Paris Opéra Ballet, Tokyo Ballet, American Ballet Theatre in New York, and the Bolshoi Ballet.
His repertoire now comprises more than 170 ballets, and his archive is preserved for research and posterity.
He has been honoured with numerous international awards throughout his life: among them the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the French Legion of Honour, the Kyoto Prize for the Arts and Philosophy (2015), and most recently admission to the Order “Pour le Mérite” (2024).
In 2024 he directed for the final time the annual Nijinsky Gala XLIX of the Hamburg Ballet, marking the end of his tenure as chief choreographer and artistic director there — while remaining active as the company’s artistic figurehead.
