Biography
Vladimir Mendelssohn was born in Bucharest and grew up in a family with a long musical tradition. He studied viola and composition, and after completing his studies he built an international career as a soloist and chamber musician. His performances have taken him to major concert halls across Europe, North America, and Asia, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Théâtre des Champs Élysées in Paris, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Wigmore Hall in London, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, the Vienna Musikverein, as well as the Moscow Conservatory and Zurich’s Tonhalle.
He has made numerous recordings, including collaborations with Gidon Kremer and the Lindsay Quartet. His discography appears on labels such as ECM, Denon, Forlane, Ondine, Nippon Columbia, Erato, and CBS. He received the AVRO Public Prize for his Brahms songs with Jaard van Nes.
Vladimir Mendelssohn has lived in the Netherlands for many years. He is Professor at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, and he is also active as a composer and arranger. His works include Histoire véritable de l’exécrable Count Dracula, a Symphony No. 1 for orchestra, chamber orchestra pieces such as La notte de la Fuga 24 and Three Caprices, several string quartets, and stage and film music, including Le petit prince and Le joueur de violon, a portrait film related to Gidon Kremer.
