Biografie
Austrian baritone Thomas Weinhappel, a former Vienna Boys’ Choir member, received two of the highest opera awards in 2017 for his portrayal of the lyrical Hamlet. He has impressed audiences in roles including Escamillo in Singapore, Tarquinius in Ostrava, Don Giovanni in Paris and Marcello in Vienna.
During the pandemic shutdown, encouraged by Wagner specialist Stefan Mickisch, he used the forced break to reposition his voice and repertoire from lyric baritone towards the dramatic, helden baritone fach. Since then, he has expanded his range to include roles such as Telramund, The Dutchman, Wotan, Kaspar, Pizarro, Jochanaan and Mandryka.
In 2023, Thomas Weinhappel returned to Escamillo in Baden and presented Wagner recital programmes in Paris, Beijing and Vienna’s MuTh. At the Klosterneuburg Festival he appeared as Posa, followed by Danilo at Beijing’s NCPA. In 2024 he made his debut as Telramund at the Wagner Festival at Sofia State Opera and sang Kaspar at the Eutin Festival in Germany, a role for which he had already received praise in Bremerhaven in 2022. In 2025 he added Scarpia to his repertoire with his role debut in Baden.
