Biografie

Osvaldo Golijov is one of the most distinctive and influential voices in contemporary music. Born in 1960 in La Plata, Argentina, he grew up in a richly layered cultural environment that would profoundly shape his artistic voice. The son of a piano teacher and a physician of Eastern European Jewish heritage, Golijov was immersed from an early age in classical music, Jewish liturgical traditions, klezmer, and the vibrant sounds of Latin America. These diverse influences continue to resonate throughout his music, forming the basis of a highly personal and immediately recognizable style.

Golijov’s musical path led him from Argentina to Israel, where he studied at the Rubin Academy in Jerusalem, and later to the United States. He completed his doctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania under the guidance of George Crumb. International attention followed through works that transcend stylistic and cultural boundaries, blending classical forms with folk traditions, popular music, and sacred texts. His breakthrough work, La Pasión según San Marcos, established him as a composer of extraordinary expressive power, while his opera Ainadamar and numerous orchestral, chamber, and vocal works have been performed worldwide. Awarded the MacArthur Fellowship and several Grammy Awards, Golijov lives and works in the United States, composing music that speaks across cultures and affirms the shared human experience at the heart of musical expression.
