Dmytro Choni clinched the third prize at the 2022 Van Cliburn Piano Competition following two and a half weeks of prestigious competition and exceptional musical performances. Prior to this, he had garnered international attention by clinching numerous top prizes and awards, including accolades from the Paloma O'Shea Santander International Piano Competition (Spain, 2018), the Leeds International Piano Competition (UK, 2021), and the Bösendorfer USASU (USA, 2019). Despite these triumphs, Dmytro reflects, "Success to me means continuously growing as a musician and as a person, never ceasing to seek the truth in music. In my view, the most crucial aspect is to love music wholeheartedly."
Upcoming highlights include his recital and chamber music debuts at renowned venues such as the Konzerthaus and Musikverein in Vienna, his debut at the Lucerne Festival in August 2023, engagements in Hamburg, Düsseldorf, and Hannover, a return to the Palau de la Música in Barcelona for a solo recital, numerous performances across the USA, debuts with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Polish Chamber Philharmonic, and the Badische Philharmonie Pforzheim, as well as a residency series at the Edesche Concertzaal in the Netherlands, featuring solo and duo recitals with violinist Josef Špaček and cellist Julian Steckel. In the 2023/24 season, he will perform concerts with violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann in cities including Munich and Milan.
His debut album, released in 2020 on Naxos, features works from the 20th century by composers such as Debussy, Ginastera, Ligeti, and Prokofiev. The album received the "Supersonic Award" from Pizzicato magazine and garnered high praise from the international press, with reviewers noting, "Dmytro Choni's purebred playing already possesses genuine greatness and genius breath" (Pizzicato); "The young man could be one of the outstanding pianists of the 21st century." (David's Review Corner).
Dmytro regularly performs as a soloist with esteemed orchestras worldwide, including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Phoenix Symphony, RTVE Symphony, Ensemble Esperanza, Ukraine National Symphony, and many others. He has collaborated with eminent conductors such as Andrew Manze, Marin Alsop, Nicholas McGegan, Yaron Traub, Baldur Brönnimann, Pablo González, Oksana Lyniv, and Lucas Macías Navarro.
He graces prestigious festivals including the Kissinger Sommer, Verbier Festival, Beethovenfest Bonn, Chopin Duszniki International Piano Festival, New Ross Piano Festival, and Dubrovnik Summer Festival. Dmytro has performed at renowned venues worldwide, leaving an indelible mark on his musical journey, including the Wigmore Hall London, Carnegie Hall New York, Salle Cortot Paris, Musikverein Wien, Minato Mirai Hall Yokohama, Flagey Brussels, Palau de la Música Barcelona, Auditorio Nacional de Música Madrid, and Teatro Colón Buenos Aires.
Chamber music also occupies a significant part of Dmytro's musical endeavors. He has collaborated with esteemed ensembles and musicians such as the Cuarteto Quiroga, Quartetto di Cremona, Calidore String Quartet, and renowned soloists including Rudens Turku, Jack Liebeck, Andrej Bielow, Mari Samuelsen, Sharon Kam, and Nils Mönkemeyer.
Dmytro Choni was born in 1993 in Kyiv, Ukraine. At the age of four, he commenced his piano studies under Galina Zaslavets. Subsequently, he studied in Kyiv with Nina Naiditch and Prof. Yuri Kot. Presently, he is pursuing studies with Prof. Dr. Milana Chernyavska at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
