Thomas Guggeis
After studies in Munich and Milan, Thomas Guggeis became Principal Assistant
of Daniel Barenboim at the Staatsoper Berlin with the season 2016/2017 at the age of 23. In this function he accompanies the Music Director during all his important productions and assists other prestigious conductors
like Zubin Mehta for Die Frau ohne Schatten and Simone Young for Tannhäuser.
This important step in Guggeis‘ musical career was preceeded by several interesting projects: He assisted Franz Welser-Möst for the highly acclaimed new production of Strauss‘ Die Liebe der Danae at the Salzburger Festspiele 2016, returning there in 2017 in the same function for Aribert Reimann‘s Magnum Opus Lear. Also in 2016 he stood by CorneliusMeister‘s side for the recording of Dvorak‘s Svatebni Košile with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna.
On symphonic repertoire, Thomas Guggeis worked with orchestras like the Munich Symphony Orchestra, the WDR Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Bad Reichenhall Philharmonic Orchestra and the Georgian Chamber Orchestra. His intense involvement in contemporary music is mirrored in the repeated collaborations with the Boulez Ensemble, the Munich-based Ensemble Oktopus and the Ensemble opus21plus.
In the operatic realm he conducted the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne and led performances at the Badische Staatstheater Karlsruhe (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) and the Chamber Opera Munich, where he held the post as Kapellmeister for several seasons.
Future plans include a new production of Pelléas et Mélisande at Theater an der Wien‘s Chamber Opera in February 2018 and several concerts at the Pierre Boulez hall in Berlin with different contemporary programs. With the season 2018/19 Guggeis will become the new Kapellmeister of the Staatsoper Stuttgart and will return to the Staatsoper Berlin as guest conductor for several revivals.
