The turbulent operetta Indigo goes on a journey. A Viennese couple finds themselves stranded on the exotic island ruled by King Indigo. Fantasca, the heroine, ends up in the king’s harem but knows how to keep him at bay. Meanwhile, her beloved Janio gains favor with Indigo by serving as his advisor, while the king remains oblivious to the fact that his kingdom is on the verge of collapse: the army is weak, the storeroom is empty, and rumors of robbers lurking in the forest are spreading. To escape the king’s clutches, Fantasca devises a plan – she convinces Indigo to offer a reward: whoever captures the robbers will win her hand in marriage. While the king becomes preoccupied with declaring himself a god, Fantasca and the other harem women disguise themselves as the robbers and let Janio “capture” them. At that very moment, a ship heading for Vienna passes by, allowing the couple – along with anyone else tired of life on the island – to board and sail away.
Director Anna Bernreitner transforms Strauss' first operetta into a travel format that can be experienced 23 times in various locations across Vienna, under the open sky.
